Hilma af Klint kept extensive notebooks in which she explained the significance of the various symbols and colors in her work. In Notes on Letters and Words pertaining to Works by Hilma af Klint, she writes, “The snail or spiral represents development or evolution.”

Every day that I paint, it’s feels like a chance to fall in love again, and for the first time.

To begin a journey of transformation, you must be willing to let go of what has held your world firmly in place. This is not always easy, and sometimes it feels like change comes as sudden turn, a dream that unexpectedly falls way, taking the ground out from underneath you.

I have seen videos of artists at work, with time condensed to show the process of creating a painting from beginning to end. However you can’t see what is going on inside of them as they paint, so I thought today I would try to give you a snapshot of of the inner dialogue I have as I am painting with Hilma:

When people think of portals, they look outside for a doorway to appear that they can step through..

In the process of painting, I am learning that perhaps portals to other dimensions are internal, not external.

Growing up, I got the message that if something doesn’t come to you quickly, if you are not “naturally” good at, it’s not for you, and you should step aside and let those who are good at it, do it.

We live in a culture where we expect things to come easily to us. Two or three tries and if we expect mastery.

She joined the Theosophical Society around the same time she started art school and soon after, Hilma, along with four other women — Anna Cassel, Cornelia Cederberg, Sigrid Hedman, and Mathilde Nilsson began meeting every Friday

You do not have to solve the problem to be able to move away from it and forward.

You need only to move.

To do something you have not done before.

You can’t plan you way through it to the other side, knowing every next step, fully in control.

You don’t need to eat every thing in your plate to feel satisfied.

You can be light about your own experience and stories. You do not have to carry your past around, lugging and dragging bags and boxes and all manner of heavy stuff tied to your ankles, weighing down every thought.

You do not have to hold on tight for dear life to what you love , for fear it will not leave you.
